Hi, this message is intended to express my discomfort not only with the "Steam way" but also with Valve's policy.
I bought HL retail some years ago and enjoyed it, when Steam came out I joined, the idea seemed plausible. Until I got in trouble. My e-mail address was at Barrysworld (when your ID was your e-mail) and I used the remember password function. I forgot my password. As many of you know, specially those living in the UK or other European countries, Barrysworld closed its doors a long time ago. I couldn't retrieve my password. So, the only solution is sending the back cover of my CD case which contains my CD-Key and proves I'm the owner so that I can register within a new Steam account.
Besides bothering to send it from Europe to the US, I have to pay $10! I know this kind of e-mail problems don't happen often, but asking everybody for $10 to have a CD-Key reset is a rip-off and shows how much Valve care about their customers. You put your game at risk trusting the postal service will work and that Valve's staff will reset your CD-Key as soon as they can. How long might it take? You don't know. Just trust Valve. Does Valve think people send their back cover for fun and Valve need to filter people due to high volume of requests by making it something you must pay for?
So, I say, OK, let's go for the Valve Premier Pack, after all, HL and its mods gave me lots of fun, let's pay for it again. I was mostly interested in Counter-Strike, as I am attending a LAN event soon and probably CS 1.6 will have more players than CS:S. I supposed that if I had HL, I could download CS for free. Of course not. This is incredible, CS started being a free mod, I started playing CS 6.5 Beta or something like that and now I find that Valve, the magical company who would make our patching easier now wants me to pay for CS:CZ to get CS!
I hope that at least you know that patches weren't something as painful as Valve have taught us to think so that we believe Steam is marvellous.
Somebody might advise me to sell that account on eBay. I would, if it weren't against Valve's policy.
Now I've bought all the HL1 stuff again, and I can't play CS. I can't get a refund, and according Valve's policy I can't sell my account either.
If this wasn't enough, you're depriving Bronze people from playing HL:S and DoD:S with no optional upgrade even by paying $20 (which is more than the difference between the bronze and silver packages). DoD:S isn't a problem as it will be released standalone too, but what about HL:S? If one wants to try it you shove him a Silver package and that's all?
I know, if you don't want it, don't buy it, but we all have been forced to surrender to Valve's steam due to game versions. Now you can't play with the rest of people if you don't have Steam. I hope other game developers won't use this. If everything works properly, it's no problem with it, in fact, it's a good experience overall, but woe betide you if things don't turn out well.
This, indeed, has killed the good opinion I had about Valve. I know it's a company, not an NGO. But they didn't have to try so hard to show they don't care about their customers and that they will try every trick to get money from people who just want to have fun.
